The Spiritual Godfather of Manga

One of the few days I wish I was in New York: an exhibition of the work of Utagawa Kuniyoshi, the early 19the century ukiyo-e artist whose work inspired modern manga and anime (and a growing chunk of both Asian and Western illustration and animation), at the Japan Society. Another hook: Kuniyoshi used Chinese warriors as his subjects, tracing yet another connection between China and Japanese culture. If you are in New York, check it out. And let me know how it was.
